utah? no way!

yes, i’m on the road headed to the beehive state.

no, i’m not moving back, so don’t worry or think i’ve lost my mind. i’m just using my time “not working” helping patti and phil drive from dc to provo.

phil is driving the moving truck with his mom and ms. patti is prego so we’re in her car telling stories, solving all of dc’s problems, reading about “the mayor for life” on wikipedia, and listen to music.

yesterday, we made it to dayton, o-hio-oooooo, where i looked for every bw3 i could see and thought of all the franklin’s.

today, we went left the buckeye state and are headed to omaha, ne. wish us luck that our butts don’t go too numb.

p.s., at this point, i believe i’ve officially traumatized my max. last night he was roaming mom’s house looking for me. likely because i’m a nomad as he’s been driven cross country twice, been left alone or at mom’s with two crazy dogs for weeks and several days at a time – i’m actually feel guilty. poor cat.

lombardi – the man.

i never win anything. nothing. ever.

i blog – obviously – so i follow other people’s blogs too. one in particular is (NO) sex in the city by natalie hill. she’s great. honest. real. entertaining. and now she gave me a give-a-way!

i have been dying to see lombardi (go packers!!) the new broadway show about vince and his life. not to mention i have been dying to go to nyc.

yes, you guessed it. she chose me for the tickets. so sara and i are headed to nyc for a quick 24 hour trip to see the show and head back home.

isn’t life grand. who would have guessed. i love spur of the moment opportunities.

road trip.

kaela and i set off for dc last week – driving cross-country to my new place, new job, closer to family.

along the way we kept a little “record” of our adventure…

1 bump-it (on a girl’s head!).
1 pit stop at pep boys to fix the car alignment.
1 very LARGE hedwig-like owl attacked the car.
1 drink left on top of the car (i think only once, is a miracle).
1 road closure – a 20 mile detour.
1 speeding ticket – thanks wyoming.
9 skunks.
100+ buffalo, mull deer, big horn sheep, and wild turkeys. [video to come]
1 chilled-out black cat.

5 ups drivers.

3 hotels.
2 friend’s houses.
7 giant letters on the side of a hill/mountain (Y, G, B, B, BR, U, L).
2 towns spelled out on the side of a hill/mountain.
2 or 3 random sights.

15 states.
AND
an insane amount of talk radio news and commercials…all of which made up our 2952.3 mile trip.

New Zealand

Many of you know this is our last stop over before we come back to the US from the month long Study Abroad in Australia.

We arrived in New Zealand about 6pm last night.

I was so tired I crashed after a much needed phone call to Erin (yes, I will pay dearly when I get home) and finishing up grading papers.

We’re staying at the Aspen House. It’s a hostel of sorts but pretty nice in the heart of downtown Auckland.

Added perk is it’s on Emily Street. he he.

It a beautiful country and in the short time we’ve been here I have to stay I live it much better than Australia.

Today I did some shopping, yes, shoes, I know…and I booked my bungee plunge time for tomorrow June 4th at 9am off a bridge in Auckland.

What the heck am I thinking????!!!!!? Those pictures will come later. Including the video.

Enjoy the events of today.

Here is someone taking the free fall from the Sky Tower.

Aboriginal Tour of Melbourne

Today we took at tour of Melbourne from the aspect of the Aboriginal life style.

It was very interesting as our guide showed us sites within the city where the Aboriginal people had once lived and thrived.

We also were able to visit a museum dedicated to their heritage. It reminded me much of our American Indian heritage in the United States.

Many Indigenous people were taken from their lands and stripped of their rights. They were often taken to Indigenous mission site, which were the equivalent of concentration camps.

Today the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne are on that location.

Our guide informed us (we don’t know how true this is) that the kangaroo apple plant was the first known birth control.

The man featured on Australia’s 50 dollar bill created the helicopter based on a boomerang but his idea was taken by an English man who is credited with the creation of the helicopter.

The Melbourne Airport called the Talamarine is actually named after an Aboriginal man. This man was stuck in a mission site for steeling food. While there he burnt down the mission site jail. He was then sent to Sydney and walked back to Melbourne where he then died. No one knows about his heritage except for the Aboriginal people even though Melbourne Airport is named after him.\

Another interesting fact is that the Elders of the Aboriginal tribes decided which women could bare children.

The average life expectancy of an Aboriginal man/woman is 45 to 65 years of age.

For more information on Aboriginals check out the following sites:
Indigenous Australians
Aboriginal People of Australia
Indigenous Australia

I took some video of our guide explaining various parts of their culture and of course pictures of the sites we saw. None of the sites look much like Aboriginal homes now just big city skyscrapers!
