the good…

the bad. the ugly. the really bad?

from my recent run. 6 miles.

the good -
lululemon’s turbo run short.

love. love. love these!
they do NOT ride up – at all.
totally comfy.
two pockets.
on sale.
i’m sold. you should be too.

the bad -
stepping on 1 baby frog and nearly killing another.
eating a bug.
getting attacked by 4 spider webs.

not really ugly but more like…the really bad -
so i need some help with this one.
chime in!

during each run at about mile 2, i end up over heating…
full out chills, goose bumps, the whole 9-yards.
water doesn’t help.

i know part of it has to be my new medicine.
they have warnings about watching exposure to high heat.
does running count as high heat?!

so what to do.
1. i’m not going to stop training/running.
2. hydrate much more – days earlier?
3. bring electrolyte jelly beans on every run?
4. run on the treadmill (but then how will I be able to be ready for the race outside?)
5. any other ideas????

my running trail.

has some odd sights…

1. two storage facilities
2.  industrial park
3. make out parking lot (trust me on this – i saw it with my own eyes)
4. animal shelter
5. mini golf course
6. water park
7. river to chesapeake bay
9. recycling plant
10. condos
11. hotel
12. soccer field
12. baseball field
13. movie theater
14. strip mall (the fancy kind)
15. metro/bus station

and that’s all in less than 5 miles.
good times.

twilighter 5k

hot! hot! hot! insanely hot!

against many people’s advice and pleas for me not to run…
last night i ran the twilighter 5k this year all by myself – no jamie [see last years post]
but the HG did drive me and take me home so that was nice.

i took my inhaler before hand.
had my new shoes on – to break them in for the 10k and 1/2 coming up.

my gps was all set along with my nano and my new bose ear phones
plus it helps that they handed out sponges.

that was the plan at least…
gps wouldn’t pick up because of the buildings in crystal city. so i didn’t get an accurate time.
my nano kept freaking out so it’s probably good that i train on and off without it.
then there was heat. shortly after mile 2 i got the child and felt the effects of the heat coming on.
i kept running knowing that i had electrolytes (beans) with me and plenty of water.
that didn’t help. around 2.5 i nearly passed out. i was sick and didn’t want to get picked up by the medics.
so, i walked. boo. i know! it’s only 3.1miles but i was seriously over come by the heat.

i did it though – even with the walking
the fact i’ve been sick all week
haven’t eaten
and slept very little
i didn’t do to shabby.

on to the next race and more trainings.

oh and the pit stop at BW3 for some post race dinner – yummy!
with the hg, patti and phil.

the nonrunner’s marathon guide for women.

author: dawn davis

publisher: seal press, january 3, 2007

amazon’s summary:

dawn dais hated running. and it didn’t like her much, either. her fitness routine consisted of avoiding the stairs in her own house, because who really has the energy to climb stairs? it was with this exercise philosophy firmly in place that she set off to complete a marathon.

the nonrunner’s marathon guide for women is a fun training manual for women who don’t believe that running is their biological destiny but who dream of crossing the finish line nonetheless. it opens with a realistic training schedule and is chock-full of how-to’s, quizzes, and funny observations, which Dais felt were lacking in the guides she had consulted.

the nonrunner’s marathon guide for women also integrates entries from dias’ journal, sharing everything would-be marathoners need to know about the gear, the blisters, the early morning workouts, the late-night carb binges, and — most important of all — the amazing rewards.

anyone can do a marathon. this book just makes the experience a little more bearable and a lot more fun.

my review: great read for any runner. basic tips – not too detailed or complicated. hilarious, hilarious descriptions of what we go through, fear and experience. definitely not a runner’s training guide but more of a sort of “you rah rah”, support group book.

helped me think of things to get through my current training and stay motivated. now i know what i’m running for – so when i feel like giving up i will remember the 3 things – even if they are just my secret (chapter 2, page 38).

a few aspects about nutrition that could be misleading for those who do not understand caloric intake vs. out put. plus, everyone metabolizes food differently. she does have a disclaimer up front.

super quick read – under 2 hours.

some of my notes when i was reading:

- loving this book. can’t put it down. great ideas for motivating my training
- pages 186 and 187 made me laugh so hard i cried. her journal entries are the best. so real and relatable.
- pages 44-46 in her journal about week 5 was priceless. way to go LDS missionaries on their bikes (chapter 2, page 45). rock it.

book marks:

training schedule – page 13
the end of the honeymoon – page 100
your before, and after chart – page 134
chapter 10, the mentality – page 162
my marathon fears – page 166

a few higlights:

page 10 – “i have a checkered history of starting things and not finishing them (college, my great American novel, that broccolis on my dinner plate). i grew tired of being the kind of person who talked about doing things instead of actually doing them. i really didn’t want a marathon to be just one more of those things.”

page 29 – “when i was deciding whether to train, i had an overwhelming doubt that blanketed all my decision-making. all the ‘you can do it’s’ and the ‘go girl’s’ were drowned out by ‘uh, no you can’ts’ and the ‘girl, you crazy’s’ running through my head…tell every person you know )even people you don’t know) that you’re training for a marathon. not for the accolades or the smpathy or the awe. do it for the accountability.”

page 119 – “i made up a song about this [being lapped]. well, i didn’t make it up, lionel richie made it up, i just changed his words a little. it goes like this: ‘once…twice…three tiiiimes you’ve passed meee…and i wannna triiiiiip yoooouuu.”

my rating: 5/5

why my rating? i could relate. i loved, just loved the journal entries. i’ve read a lot of how to run books, books giving tips on running but this book was real, basic, and hilarious.

other reviews:
run infinity
reading refections

**rating scale – stars: out of 5

1 star: not a fan – at all. i couldn’t finish the book.
1.5 stars: not worth my time. definitely, thought about putting it down and moving on to something else.
2 stars: fine. nothing to write home about.
2.5 stars: was ok, but if i hadn’t read it i’d live.
3 stars: enjoyed the book but was bothered by a particular aspect.
3.5 stars: glad i read it. would recommend it but isn’t one that stays in my permanent collection (i won’t be moving it with me to my next apartment).
4 stars: i really enjoyed this book. had no problem getting through it and would recommend it to my friends and family.
4.5 stars: loved it. lingers on my mind – actively promoting for others to read.
5 stars: fabulous! can’t stop thinking about it. worth re-reading – highlighted passages and made an impact.

between the end of this month and the beginning of october i’m running 4 races.

i planned all of them except for august so to build upon each other…
in order to reach the goal of the 1/2 in october.

alas, amy convinced me to come home and run with her – that’s where august come in.
it technically is a postponement from may’s run, which i couldn’t do.

2. cheesehead 1/2 marathon – august 27, 2011

Jun 25

just a saturday night.

the life of a 35 year old – living with friends – in maryland – on a saturday night.

shopping!

new shoes (flats, i needed flats in gold of course, especially when they two for the price of one)
new running gear (a.k.a underwear for runners)
perfume and more perfume (i ran out months ago!!!)

justin might not have approved of my choice in perfume – i didn’t buy his
but he liked me groping him in public.

then there was baby heaven…
preggers, her husband and i hit up babies-r-us.

we rocked it.
i test drove a few strollers. the jeep version was quite the ride.
found baby scheide’s first out fit from me…

i then tested a few rockers while the parents-to-be made some final decision.
this was purely selfish on my part as my legs were sore from running earlier.

what a happy preggers! i love her so.

oh, did i mention we had din din at red lobster? some yummy tilapia.
not so yummy now – stomach hurts.

running home.

last night i came “home” to dinner and a little mini family.

jodi (aka: preggers, pregnant mama, pm) was quite the homemaker while i was at work!
that woman has more energy than anyone i know – to be up sick all night, clean the house, make dinner and keep it all looking good – she’s my hero.

i was ordered (yes, ordered) when i walked in the door after a 12 hour work day to change my clothes and come to dinner. no joke.
i so adore my favorite pm. just like old times.

dinner with the missionaries. a few laughs by tj and me at preggers expense.
chats about life back in minne.

some lovies by the two dogs (lola waited outside my bedroom door today).
i’m clearly a great house guest if the dogs can’t wait for me to get back!

lots of baby talk with the pregnant mama.
off for a walk together to stretch her legs.

then, i took my run.
i was in heaven. really.
i ran through the neighborhood at dusk with the fire flies.

tonight for the first time in a long time…
i felt connected.
i felt i belonged.
i felt at home.

it felt like the days running in edina and plymouth.
making dinner in shakopee – calamari to be exact.
even driving in a green little honda with two crazy girls.

these are the days to cherish.

Apr 13

ok, so remember how…

i said i was going to run today…
it’s not gonna happen.

here’s why .

that pesky little pinched nerve is worse than i thought.

i get to wear this pretty neck brace for at east 2 full weeks. yikes!
i can’t lift anything for 2 weeks – sorry laundry basket.

but the worst part – yes, i did cry – i am forbidden to run.
= no 1/2 marathon for me in may = incredible disappointment.

booo.

Apr 12

i’m still here.

i haven’t stopped running. i just had a little set back, called a pinched nerve.

couldn’t move my neck or my left arm for 3 full days.
this is day 4 and i’m still super sore and have to be very careful.

i did try to run the first day thinking i could tough it out
not my best idea ever.

i tried everything  (see above – just a few things from my stash) and a lot of drugs!

here’s to a nice long easily paced run tomorrow.
i hope!
