Israel, Egypt, & Jordan

Last week, I sealed the deal.

I am going on a 2 week vacation to Israel, Egypt, & Jordan in April 2011! And, I can’t wait.

I’m so thrilled that Rin asked me to tag along. What a fabulous opportunity to see a part of the world I wouldn’t normally get to see.

Here’s the scoop…

Day 1: Fri. April 1: Today we fly from our various USA cities to Amman, the capital of Jordan.

Day 2: Sat: April 2:We arrive in Jordan, the ancient land of Moab, home of Ruth. It was here that David sent Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, to his death. We will head directly south to Petra, the Rose-Red City. Upon arrival we will check into our hotel in Petra.

Day 3: Sun. April 3:This morning we explore Petra, the newly voted “Wonder of the World.” We will walk down the narrow canyon to the breathtaking view of the Treasury, Petra’s most famous landmark. You will have time to visit this fascinating city carved from the cliffs of the canyon and experience some of the best ruins found anywhere in the world. We will then head back to Amman to overnight.

Day 4: Mon: April 4:Today we will experience the view from Mt. Nebo as Moses saw it before the Children of Israel crossed the Jordan River into Israel. We will also visit the real baptismal site where it is believed Jesus was baptized on the Jordan side of the Jordan river near the dead Sea. Located near by is a wonderful beach resort on the Dead Sea. You will have time to float in the dead sea before we head for the ruins of Jerash, possible the best Roman Ruins out side of Rome. After our tour we travel north to the border with Israel and then on to the Sea of Galilee. We check into our hotel for the next three nights.

Day 5: Tues. April 5: This morning we will also travel to Ein Harod, the spring where Gideon chose his three hundred men before routing the Midianites. Then it is on to the top of Mt Carmel where Elijah had his historic confrontation with the priests of Baal with its dramatic conclusion. We travel on to Nazareth, home of the Savior for thirty years of his life. Our day ends with a sweeping view of the Jezreel Valley from Nazareth dominated by Mt. Tabor where we will discuss the transfiguration of the Savior. Deborah and Barak gathered their forces at Mt Tabor and defeated Sisera’s iron chariots. We will also visit today the Arbel Cliff for a fantastic overview of the Sea of Galilee. Our day would not be complete without a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee where we can discuss Jesus walking on the water and stilling the storm.

Day 6: Wed. April 6: Our journey today takes us north of the Sea of Galilee. We begin by visiting Capernaum where so many wonderful events and teachings of the Savior took place. We then stop at the Mount of Beatitudes where we will ponder the great truths delivered by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Driving to the far north of Israel we pass the Canaanite city of Hazor on our way to Tel Dan. Here Jeroboam erected a golden calf for the Israelites to worship, marking the beginning of a road that would end with the “lost ten tribes.” The restored walls and gates give us an excellent idea of the fortifications Joshua would have faced as he conquered the land. We will visit Banias, known as Caesarea Philippi in the days of Jesus where he asked his disciples, “Whom do ye say that I am?” At the end of the day we will return to our hotel on the Galilee.

Day 7: Thurs. April 7:This morning we turn west to the Mediterranean Sea. Our focus shifts now to the Apostles Peter and Paul as we discover Caesarea, Here the Roman centurion, Cornelius, became the first gentile convert to Christianity and Paul related his account of his vision on the road to Damascus to King Agrippa. We will visit the picturesque old Roman aqueduct and let you wade in the Mediterranean Sea. We conclude our visit to Caesarea at the Roman theatre, and hippodrome where chariot races were held. Time permitting we will stop in Netanya where the Presidents of the LDS Church and those who dedicated the Holy Land are honored in a special memorial. We then travel to the new city of Jerusalem and visit the Shrine of the Book where the Dead Sea Scrolls are located, and the Model City, a reproduction of Jerusalem at the time of Jesus. The day will end at your hotel in Jerusalem.

Day 8: Fri. April 8: Today we drive a few miles to Bethlehem where we will remember the wondrous account of the Savior’s birth as recorded in Mathew and Luke and retold each Christmas. We will walk through the Church of the Nativity and sing Christmas Carols. We will then drive south for our unique visit at Beit Lehi to experience an archeological dig firsthand. We will stop at the Valley of Elah where David fought Goliath then continue on to the dig. Our visit to Beit Lehi includes beautiful early Christian mosaics, oil presses, a mikvah (a ritual bath) and the recently discovered columbary where doves were raised by the thousands for sacrifice at the Temple. There is also a New Testament period stable which will give you one of the best settings for the birth of the Savior. You can explore a remarkable site few get to visit. This is also the area where Samson roamed and fought his foes, the Philistines. Keep your eyes open for foxes which Samson used to burn the Philistine crops. We will then return to Jerusalem to overnight.

Day 9: Sat. April 9: In Israel, today is the Sabbath. We will start the day with the stunning view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives. We then visit the Jerusalem Center. Today we reach the spiritual pinnacle of our pilgrimage as we retrace the footsteps of our Savior during the last hours of his life and feel the deep appreciation these places create for the sacrifice of the Son of God. We begin on Mt. Zion at the traditional site of the Upper Room where the Last Supper was shared with devoted apostles. We visit St. Peter in Gallicantu, the possible site of the cock’s crowing and the Palace of Caiaphas where Jesus was tried. From there we descend into the Kidron Valley to visit Gethsemane, the Garden of the Savior’s deepest prayers. In the afternoon we will enter the Old City and continue the last hours of the Savior’s life. We will visit The Church of St Anne where the Pools of Bethesda were located. Here Jesus commanded the impotent man to take up his bed and walk. We visit the Convent of the Sisters of Sion, the location of the Antonia Fortress where Pilate tried the Savior. Our highlight day concludes at Golgotha and the Garden Tomb where we will have time to ponder the Resurrection and final triumph of Christ.

Day 10: Sun. April 10: Our attention today is drawn to the Old City of Jerusalem. We will explore the ruins located south of the Temple Mound where you can walk the sidewalks and stairs of Jesus’ time. We will climb the Temple Mount where both Solomon’s and Herod’s temples once stood and where the magnificent Dome of the Rock and Al Aksa Mosques now stand. We will stop at the Western Wall, the most sacred site for the Jewish faith. You can write a prayer on a piece of paper and place it into the cracks of the wall as millions have done before you. We will walk through Hezekiah’s Tunnel, built over 2500 years ago to secure the water supply of Jerusalem during the Assyrian siege. You will need a flashlight for the tunnel. At its end we find the Pool of Siloam where the man born blind washed as instructed by Jesus and came away seeing. You will have time today to explore the old city and shop before returning to your hotel in Jerusalem.

Day 11: Mon. April 11: This Morning early we drive through the Judean Wilderness to the Dead Sea. The Judean Wilderness was the home of John the Baptist and the place Jesus went to prepare for his ministry and where he was tempted of the Devil. Passing along the shores of the Dead Sea we will make a quick stop for a photo of the Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. We will stop at Ein Gedi, the natural springs where David cut off the hem of Saul’s robe while hiding in a cave. Rising above the desert floor is Herod the Great’s fortress of Masada which we will visit via cable car. During the Jewish revolt in 70 C.E. Masada’s defenders committed suicide rather than be taken prisoner by the Romans. We will then travel through the wilderness arriving at Eilat, where we cross the border with Egypt We will continue directly to our 5 star luxury Marriott resort located on the Red Sea.

Day 12: Tue. April 12: Red Sea – 5 Star Marriott Resort You have a full day to relax and enjoy this fantastic resort located on the Red Sea. You can snokel the beautiful coral reefs just off the beach, swim in the beautiful swimming pools with waterfalls or just relax. You overnight again tonight at this fantastic resort.
Day 13: Wed. April 13: Taba – Aswan
This morning early we fly to Aswan where we will spend the day visiting some of the Best Egypt has to offer. We will start with a boat ride to the Island of Philae and its magnificent temple. We then travel by bus about 1 ½ hours to Edifu (the 2nd largest temple in Egypt), then it is on to Luxor and the Luxor Temple before going to our 5 star luxury hotel in Luxor.

Day 14: Thu. April 14: Luxor – Cairo
Luxor was one of the great capitals of ancient Egypt. We will enjoy a full day of touring, visiting the Valley of the Kings, Medinet Habu, a spectacular funeral temple built for Ramases III, and the huge temple complex of Karnak. Early this evening we will fly to Cairo where we will check into our 5 star Luxury Resort Hotel Intercontinental City Stars.

Day 15: Fri. April 15: Cairo – Pyramids
We will spend the day touring the important sites around Cairo. Foremost are the Pyramids, built over four thousand years ago and the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. Next to the Pyramids we find the Sphinx. We will visit the papyrus institute where we will learn about this ancient skill and where you can purchase a beautiful example of Egyptian hieroglyphics. We will also visit the Alabaster Mosque and explore the world of the Muslim faith, before retuning to our 5 star hotel.

Day 16: Sat. April 16: Cairo
Today you will have some free time to relax, shop and pack for your flight home. Today will also be one of your highlight days as you visit the famous archeological museum in Cairo which houses the world’s greatest collection of Egyptian artifacts including King Tutankhamen’s treasures. Happy Valentine’s Day!

A Hallmark holiday, right? A holiday that many single people tend NOT to be big fans of, right?

No big Valentine in my life this year…don’t feel bad, I’m actually more loved than if I had a date (or at least I think so right now;)).

Plus, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I am grateful for all the past relationships I’ve had because of what I’ve learned about my self and about what I want and need.

So I just wanted to tell all those in my life who mean the world to me how much I love them…there are several who have been there for me when I needed it the most.

Disclaimer, these are in no particular order:
1. Mom – for taking my calls in the middle of the night, loving me unconditionally, forgiving me and making me laugh at myself and at you.

2. Tony – for being the kind of brother that drives me crazy but deep down loves me enough to be proud of me that he secretly brags about me.

3. Jasmine – for being the love of my life and she’s not even my 7 year old. She reminds me about why life is worth living!

4. Onalee – for reminding me how lucky I really am and to listen to my own advice.

5. Adam W. – for letting me hang up on him and he still calls back…a true sign of love for your friend.

6. Lindsay & Josh – for lending me there baby to get snuggles and laughs, for watching out for me and being solid.

7. Jamie P. – for listening to my calls in the middle of the day, for trusting me with those fun secrets, and for blessing me with the joy of hanging out with Jack and Max (p.s. and her husband who tolerates me:))

8. Becky H. – for being one of the funniest people I know, being my “do NOT call” girl and forgiving me when I fail.

9. Becky – for being my only “sister” and loving me like one even though she has two of her own.

10. Jason and Clint – for being the guys in my life that keep me on my toes and make me blush.

11. Corinne & Kristi – for being amazing friends and sounding boards, for teaching me how to be a good mom (someday)

12. Jacque & Dean – for being the best 2nd family a girl could ask for, for teasing me to help make me feel like I’m home.

11. Marla – for seriously cracking me up like no one else in the world ever could.

12. Victoria – for loving me just by watching me watch TV and for never letting me down.

13. Linda – for being the best mentor a young professional could ask for, giving me so many opportunities and understanding why I had to go.

14. Erin, Karen and JW – for making the last 5 years some of the very best ever…words can’t do it justice.

15. Heather – for being a friend, an outlet to vent…we were always meant to be friends (maybe that’s why we got here that way)…it’s great we think the same.

16. Chris – for being the best guy friend over the last 26 years.

17. The Medicine Lake Young Women – they just make me happy and make me young…wait I’m not old! :)

18. Grandma – for always taking my side even when I’m wrong, for being so proud of me and making sure my head didn’t get to big.

19. Jaimie – for never forgetting that she owes me for making her life better…actually it’s probably the other way around, 10th floor and my 21st…not to mention the multiple things we can not talk about.

20. Talise – for rocking, plain and simple…for always writing back and making me stronger.

21. Wes & Matt – for loving sushi and being my big brothers.

22. Tana, Braden & the kids – for letting me be the auntie under the blanket.

23. David -for being the best coop planner I know, for being the best estate sale buddy, and for making me laugh at all the crazy people we know.

24. Danielle – for making my brother happy.

25. Jodi – for reminding me that I’m perfect just the way I am and of course reminding me about checking yes or no (let’s just hope some day it’s YES).

And for all those other wonderful people in my life that I didn’t mention today…you’re shout out will come, don’t worry.

Oh Minnesota…

Since I’m an insomniac, I’ve had a lot of time to think…which for me isn’t always good, as I wish I could automatically shut my brain off…I’ve been able to come up about a zillion reasons why I love it here and only a few things I’ll be grateful to be rid of when I drive out of town next week!

So here goes…

Top 20 reasons to love MN (in no particular order):

1. Super large snowflakes.

2. A lake or pond on every corner.

3. The perks of a big city without the massive number of people.

4. Being a hop, skip, and a jump from Wisconsin.

5. Being able to say I am a Big 10 alumnae.

6. Being able to drive through St. Paul and look at the beautiful homes and imagine I live in one of them.

7. Being a part of the best public health system in the country.

8. Friends that send me emails in the middle of the day just to torture me.

9. Friends who you can lay in a giant bed with (I know sounds bad) and laugh until you want to pee you pants…all due to things such as really good TV, unexpected movements by those around that just shouldn’t happen, girl talk that shouldn’t be mentioned…

10. Friends who will take you to see a good old fashion girlie movie and not tell you that the beeping dog dies, will laugh at you when you get hit in the face (multiple times) playing volleyball, run or bike with you in the summer humidity, won’t let you forget you’re getting older:)

11. Sunday dinners with family.

12. 5 “brothers” who like to tease the crud out of me.

13. Amazing role models and confidants.

14. Some wonderful young women who never make me feel over 30.

15. Coworkers who listen to you vent, cry and remind you to stay away from boys and stick to men.

16. Coworkers who love to shop just as much as I do.

17. The best bonfires in the fall.

18. The MOA. Ok, just kidding about that one but seriously, practically any store you could imagine between Bloomington, Edina, and Maple Grove.

19. Sushi!

20. The memories that can’t be replaced.

Top 5 reasons to leave MN (yes, I thought of a few more but why focus on those?!):

1. Traffic – People can’t drive in the rain or the snow even though they’ve been doing it their whole lives.

2. People’s obsession with the Great MN Get Together.

3. It’s beeping cold and uncomfortably hot in a span of less than 6 months.

4. Being able to start fresh!

5. The Vikings.

It’s official

I took the teaching job at BYU and am moving to Utah!!! I will start January 1 at the “Y”. My last day at the “U” – University of Minnesota- will be December 18th…so I’ll be moving over Christmas.

byu_logo.png

I feel so blessed to have this wonderful opportunity to be looking at a new adventure and new challenges. I am so sad to be leaving MN – I’ve been here 10 years now – I will miss so many things so much…including my friends…

1. the Barnhart’s for being my family away from home – with teasing and all – especially Erin who keeps me centered and has been my rock;

2. the Wilson’s (all of them, each family unit!!) who have taught me so much about the Gospel and have helped me tremendously especially Jenny who has been a great friend even though I can’t believe she showed me Saturday’s Warrior and if I need to laugh she’ll have to send me her screaming video;

3. the Sessions’ for all their home cooked meals over the years and sound boy advice, especially Karen for all of our “talks” on the immunity subject and snuggling in bed;

4. Marla for making me laugh every single day and for reminding me that at least I’m a better driver than somone!;

5. Victoria for things words just can’t describe;

6. AW for making me laugh at myself espeically at midnight and for letting me hang up on him and he still calls back;

7. Jodi for the laughing/crying/venting sessions and for forever helping me change my life;

8. Jamie for being such a great listening ear and my favorite “PB” connection;

9. Becky for reminding me about pinching butts and living life no matter what comes at you;

10. Corrinne for being such a wonderful sounding board and role model;

11. Of course my “Other” Family or Families…the Jackson’s, Aase’s, Kusch’s, Stark’s, Oelkers’, the Brown’s; the Bemis’; and

12. my precious young women…thanks for loving me as much as I love you.

I’m sure I’m forgetting someone or many people for that matter especially given I haven’t even started on the people in my work life…David, Cheryl, Linda O-K, Megan…Gosh, I feel like the list never ends..

I also want to thank my mom so much for her support in helping me make this decision. It’s nice to know that even when you’re an adult you can still call on your mom for advice.

It will be weird not to live in the midwest any more but I know I’ll be back:) How could I leave my favorite 6 year old or my brother, sister-in-law, and the rest of the family, right Gma.

P.S. – Oh and in case Jaimie Schuster is reading this (I have not forgotten you)…you know I’ve always got your back…no matter how far I am.

Boo!

I love Halloween! It’s my most favorite holiday besides my birthday;) Ha Ha!!

I thought I’d celebrate this year with a blog of the fun we’ve had over the years…mostly only because it’s 3:45am and I can’t sleep (again).

So each year a bunch of us end up going to a Haunted House and try to watch a scary movie as well…I think we’ve ended up with more laughs than scares but hey at least we keep going even though we decided this year we definitely felt old:) This year’s annual haunted house adventure probably was the best in the last 7 years…if I do say so myself and I think Karen and Rin would agree.

We also decided we should be haunted house designers…we came up with some sweet ideas on our ride home. Stay tuned you never know which one of us may actually get the itch to stop going and start our own scare factory!

I figured I’d recap all the adventures going in reverse order:

2001- Valley Fair Haunted House – geared towards the youngins and rather lame-o

2002- Trail of Terror – more of a good laugh than anything else. That year I remember Rachel Fogel falling to the ground and I nearly peed my pants laughing!

2003- Nothing this year at least that I can remember in regards to a haunted house but let me tell you the first church dance I attended was this year…Jodi was Oscar the Grouch and Jenny was a Fairy…good thing it was the time in which dances were good:) LOL!

2004- Wabasha Street Caves – this one we did for Marla’s birthday and Adam kept yelling out people’s names for the “scary” people to then yell back at us…thanks Adam! This year was probably our biggest group.

2005- Haunted Hay Ride at Pine Haven Farms – we drove for what felt like 3 hours just to get there and the best part was Jenny screaming her head off because someone came up behind her on the ride…then the trip to see “The Fog” where Adam met up with us…priceless

2006- Ramsey County Sheriff’s Fright Farm- per Adam’s recommendation, we stood in line for EVER and actually laughed our way out. This was the first time I met Kate and Gavin’s friend Dan came with Rin, Gavin and I to this one. This was also the year I got talked into dressing up and “trick or treating” to my friends’ houses as a giant (yes, giant) dryer part of the washer dryer combo.

clips25.jpg

Just picture me giving Adam a hard time for recommending a bad haunted house…
he knows I love him dearly…remember it’s tough love;)

2007- Edgecomb Haunted Estate- again…based on a recommendation that I read…waiting in line twice as long as the year before and it was beeping freezing on top of it…I haven’t drank that much hot chocolate since a highschool football game…definitely not worth the wait.This trip involved Rin, Katie Burton, Gavin and I.

2008- The Soap Factory -  Given the fact that Karen never lifted her head frm a 90 downward looking angle, Erin had both hands over her ears and I had my periferal vision attire on (aka: my hoodie and Packer’s hat) the three of us were quite a pair. This year we had to sign a waiver which really was more for the fact that we were crawling around boilers in a basement. This one out of the last 6 was the best…Anyone who says they don’t get at least a little scared is lying but overall it wasn’t as bad as anyone thought…the best was the conversation between Erin and the clown about what kind of dress his mom wore…ahh the joys…Then of course the phone call to Jenny to LIE to her and say I peed my pants…LOL!

dscn1153v2.jpg

Oh ya…this years group…minus Jenny:(

**Anyway, at least each year’s been getting a little better!

I personally can’t wait to see Ella, Aaron, Brayden, Caitlyn and of course Jaz in their costumes…this weekend! Jaz, your dad better have taught you to play The Great Pumpkin Yatzee Game before I see you next!

charliebrown.jpg

I shall not name names of these characters from our own little posse;)
I’ll keep you guessing!

NKOTB!

The concert rocked…yes, I know, you can’t relive your childhood but man talk about flash backs. It was priceless. See the special from WCCO and the article from the Trib if you don’t want to take my word for it.

Erin and I had a blast. It was really a good concert…very entertaining…a good show.

If I were a single man I would have been hanging out at this concert…99% early 30′s women going crazy. See the second clip of Donnie talking to the crowd as he mentions that too.

The woman to the left of me cried on and off during the entire concert. Part of me hoped that she was just having a bad day and not that crazy about the NKOTB at the age of 30 something!

Then there were women in front of us and behind us screaming up a storm and singing at the top of their lungs. Needless to say Erin and left the concert nearly deaf. If you watch the video clips and hear screaming, it is NOT me or Erin it’s the people around us.

Some people were dressed in 80′s outfits and old school NKOTB t-shirts…I have to go through my box of stuff and see if I still have my old t-shirts. I think I might…since Marla warned me to save them:) Even the cars in the parking lot had signs in the window and writing on them as well that said New Kids or bust.

dsc00525.JPG

Not our car (obviously, since we’d never be that nuts) but just one of many like it.

Here they come! Joey is in Pink and Donnie in the hat.

They put on a great show…Jordan isn’t the best dancer…
He was actually kind of freaky at times.

The excitement of 3 new things…are they related?

It’s been an exciting week. Two big events happened…well actually three!

1. After about 2 years on the wait list…Erin’s SMART Car arrived! It was just in time for her 28th birthday and prior to her trip to Paris, France. The car is sweeeeeet. It rides smooth and is super fun.

08-31-08_1336.jpg

img00031.jpg

2. I bought a new car! It was time for my civic to go so I did some research and actually almost bought a Jeep Comander but decided on a Mitsubishi Outlander. It’s got some great sound and I can even plug in my iPod and watch a DVD. For those of you who don’t know Mitsubishi means 3 Diamonds in Japanise (per Matt Barnhart)…how appropriate:)

3. On a related note (to the 3 Diamonds)…Jodi Wren got engaged yesterday!!!! She and TJ have not set a date but they are thrilled. In her words…her ring looks like the Eiffle Tower (again…related to item #1…Erin’s trip to Paris).

Fireworks!

Tonight was Music in Plymouth. This is an annual event in town and it is jam packed. People actually go at 5:30am to set up their spots. The whole Medicine Lake Ward and Plymouth Ward were there…I went with the Barnhart’s, just as I did last year. We were right next to everyone.

We had some super yummy food and tons of laughs. All the young women were there and boy were Eleanor and Erin G. funny. Oh, the stories I could tell. It was a great night…no bugs and I even walked from my house over to the site (over 2.5miles) to get a bit of exercise and save some gas…Thanks to Erin B. for taking me home.

Enjoy the pictures and video of the fireworks!

img00039.jpg

Me and Erin with our glow in the dark rings…you should have seen the mouth guard that glows which I did buy for 5 bucks. Those pictures will come later!

GiGi had a blast tonight and had about 20 glow rings on her arms and legs!

Consumer WARNING: You can hear Erin and I (ok mostly me) singing along on the video…it’s not pretty, I have no singing ability at all!

Two nights later on the actually 4th, we had a BBQ at the Barnharts and did some fireworks with the kids. Here are a few pictures but you can check out more of them on the link at the top of the page.

Sneaky Squirrels

squirel1.jpg

Our official Mascot (taken by my cousin’s husband Mike).

So over the course of our friendship Erin and I have had the joy of playing some fun practical jokes or “missions” on a few of our friends…All harmless and in good taste but none the less very entertaining. Those of you who have been a “victim” know how creative we can be…

So where did the name come from, do you ask…well, about 3 years ago, I just started calling a friend who shall remain nameless a “Sneaky Squirrel”…this person was so sure that this was the most crazy, absurd phase in the world that it really should be “Sneaky like a fox” or “Stealthy like a fox”. Obviously I disagreed. I was proven correct when all over YouTube you can find videos of squirrels doing sneaky things!

Just to be clear, this is not an secret society or elitest group but there are a few rules or requirements for membership.

1. You MUST be able to keep a secret…tell no one…give no hints and provide no indication that you know anything.

2. You MUST be creative. These official mission are not your standard fork the lawn or T-P the trees kind of stuff.

3. You MUST be willing to go out on a limb…much like a squirrel and take some chances.

4. You MUST want to laugh hysterically on a regular basis.

5. You MUST love squirrels.

If you can pass these you then need to own a pet squirrel (which obviously can be fake – see below)…and pass a few more “tests”…are you up for the challenge?
